Picnic time!!!!

I can't believe it's that time of year already! The picnic is this Saturday and I will be surrounded by many of the most beautiful Havanese that I know, some of them friends, some our grand-puppies and some of them acquaintances that we have met over the years. But the one thing their owners and families all have in common is their love for our wonderful breed, the Havanese.
I hope many of you will be able to come for the day. Perhaps this humidity will break and we will have a nice breeze here in Brighton as we usually do this time of year.
Remember it's a potluck luncheon and all are welcome. If you need directions or a map, just drop me a note and I will send them off to you asap!!

Home from South....

We finally arrived home from sunny Florida. The girls had a terrific time as there was none of that cold white stuff to freeze their little paws! Here we are at Woofstock in Islamorada. Lots of doggies to sniff but a very hot day and our tongues were down to our toes!!
We are looking forward to having a lovely spring here in Brighton and hopefully the warm weather will arrive soon! The grass is already to be cut and is lovely and green. Good for getting in the hair when you do a back roll in the sunshine!!

Here at Chicadoro, we've had the busiest fall!!!
A film crew was here to shoot an episode of PICK A PUPPY for CMT TV.

Then we also filmed at the VEC an episode of ER VETS during our BAER testing with Dr. Susan Cochrane. It was very interesting to see the work that goes into preparing and shooting these types of shows. There's a whole bunch of "hurry up and wait" LOL
When I find out the dates that the episodes will be shown, I'll let you all know.

and it's hard to believe but Maggie's puppies have all left for their new homes. In the interim, both Flora and Lola have given us new puppies to love and cuddle.
On August 31 in the middle of the night, Lola blessed us with 5 gorgeous puppies. Three big, strong, healthy males, one big, bouncy girl and a teeny, tiny little girl that is trying hard to keep up with all the rest of her littermates!!!
Here is a shot of them just a few hours after Lola finished her labour!

Then on the morning of September 9th, Flora gave us two males and one female. This is Flora's first litter and she has become one of the most loving, caring moms that we have ever seen. Her babies are cared for beautifully. Here are some pictures of her little ones shortly after they were born.

Outdoors, it is so hot and the puppies just love it!!
Exploring and hiding in the gardens is great fun for the little ones. They are so curious and filled with mischief!! Lawd help my flowers!!! I think they will be chewed to bits in a couple more weeks, HaHaHa.....

Another week gone by and we are 5 weeks old today!! These pictures were taken after our dinner. We crawl thru the bowl, tasting and trying each little morsel. So yummy, but so very, very messy!! Now it's nap time before we have our bath!

Tomorrow we will be 4 weeks old! We have been outside in the backyard with mummy Maggie and our big sister, Downsy. It was very exciting but we were a little frightened and didn't go too far from mom.
We also had our first big puppy meal. YUM!! Something called kibble and tripe? A little stinky but oh, so very tasty. Mummy only let us have a little bit and then she cleaned the bowl herself! But that's alright because then we all had a big drink from her!

Hard to believe but Maggie's little ones are now 19 days old. How the time flies!! Their eyes are open and they are starting to walk. They stagger around the whelping box like little drunken sailors, :)
Maggie is being such a good mom and feeding, cleaning and playing gently with her babies. These puppies are making purring sounds when they feed. It is the funniest thing and at first I thought I was hearing things but the more they feed, the louder the purr. I wish I could capture it for all to hear. I am going to try to get a video of them all walking this afternoon and will post it asap.

Hard to believe, but Maggies' pups are already a week old. Growing by leaps and bounds, they are crawling, exploring and feeling their way thru their environment in the whelping box. Sight and sound does not start until 12-15 days of age. This makes newborn pups so very fragile and of course, makes Maggie very protective of them.
Even though Lola, Flora & Downsy are fascinated by these tiny creatures, Maggie will not allow any of them to come close to her babies.

And Maggie is dealing with these 6 little ones as if it were a walk in the park. It's amazing to watch as she cares for these little pups so tenderly. Feeding constantly, cleaning, helping them to eliminate. I don't think she's slept since Tuesday night! and although this is her third litter, she is loath to leave them even for a few minutes to do her own business. But all this care is paying off as they are thriving and just glowing with health!!

Starting at 6am yesterday, Maggie delivered 6 beautiful, bouncing, tail wagging puppies. 5 boys and 1 tiny little girl. 3 of the boys and the only girl are sable like their mom, ranging from a beautiful toffee colour to a rich deep brown with some white markings and darker masks developing. Other 2 boys are brown and white partis, but what a deep, rich chocolate brown they are!!! They are so dark, I thought they were black & whites when they were first born but then as they dried, I saw the faint difference meaning they were brown.

It's that time of year again when all Havanese come together and meet at the annual picnic. This year the picnic is being held at the home of Rita Thomas, Sonrisas Havanese in Baltimore. Baltimore is a tiny hamlet just north of Cobourg, off the 401. The link to Rita's address is:

As in previous years' this is a potluck affair starting at noon. Bring lawn chairs and suntan lotion!! Sorry, but only Havanese are welcome.

It's hard to believe that this little darling is 8 weeks old. Tomorrow we are going to Dr. Lex for our first set of vaccines and to be microchipped. This is one of the safest and easiest methods of identification for any of our canine friends. Should one of our babies get lost or separated from us then they can be tracked with a simple scan of their shoulders by any vet's office or animal control or shelter. A simple call to the CKC or to any of the chip providers will give the owners' contact information and quick as you can, our pup is returned to their homes and loved ones.

Don't forget to keep a watch for feet in this bitter weather. Frostbite is a worry this time of year and it only takes minutes to freeze the sensitive skin on the pads of the feet. There are products that you can buy to reduce this risk and alternately, you could try boots for your pup.

These are the words I wrote back in September when we thought that I was about to have 5 Havanese babies.....

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD, HOT SAUSAGE & MUSTARD........

Well, after a long uneventful pregnancy I finally delivered my anxiously awaited litter of (drum roll please!) 1, count 'em, one beeeeuutiful baby girl!!!!

We haven't settled on a name yet, but momma Yvonne is calling her Piglet!! After all she has the entire milk bar to herself and boy is she making good use of it! Everyone here at Chicadoro is waiting for her first steps out of the whelping box. Flora and Downsy desperately want to play with their new baby sis and Maggie wants to help care for her as well!!
With no competition in the nursing department, Piglet is growing by leaps & bounds. Here is a pic of her after nursing today.....

Well, that's all for now and I'll keep posting her progress as she growns.

My human mommy and daddy go on holidays and all I get is fun times and lots of grooming. That human Darlah calls it 'conditioning' and I am done daily, paws and all.

Wasabi best watch out as I will be stylin' by the time they get back and only Wasabi seems to strike a pose in the Talemaker yard but it's my turn to strutt my stuff.

I am sleeping with auntie Darlah as there is this 'heat' business going on. I take the top of her pillow and crowd her out. Just desserts - I say for all that grooming.

Maggie had 2 gorgeous boys and 1 darling girl. I'd love to say how dainty, tiny & petite the girl is but I can't as she's a little tubby!! Beautiful but tubby, BG!! One of the boys is as big as the girl but the other boy is quite small compared to these two. But as we know, this can change in a matter of days and the smallest could end up being the biggest and the opposite with the others.

Maggie has been an amazing mom with litter. Attentive, loving and concerned with her little ones. Alex & I have to drag her outside to do her business and then she is quickly back at the door crying to get back to her babies.

Well, this is a fine mess I've gotten us into!!
Due to the impending arrival of my two litters, we have to change the date of our Annual Picnic!!
According to the latest ultrasound, Maggie is due either on or just before the date we had chosen originally!!! Bad planning on my part but again unfortunately, Mother Nature does not tend to co-operate when it comes to a bitches season and when she will accept being bred. I really think that Maggie decided not to participate in this years picnic, LOL, and the only way she could accomplish this was to have this litter on the "most" inconvenient date possible.
So dear people, the new date of our picnic is August 23/08 and it will be held at the home of my dear friend, Rita Thomas. I do hope that this does not mess with your plans and sincerely hope that all can come (and perhaps those who couldn't come, now can!!).

Puppy Fever has struck the Chicadoro household!!!
Maggie went to visit Michelle, our wonderful vet and an ultrasound showed that she is carrying at least(!) 7 puppies!!!!
The pitter-patter of little paws will be a thundering herd come the end of August. Now that Maggie is also expecting we should have Hav babies by the handful to give wonderful puppy kisses. Puppy breath is sooooo lovely and it looks like mom better start saving those newspapers!!

Well, it's official, I'm gonna have more babies!!! Mommy took me for a drive to the nice vet's clinic today and they did something to my belly called an ultrasound. Vet Michelle was watching a little screen with fuzzy black & white pictures on it and saying "there's one and there's another and another and another". She thinks I've got 4 or 5 babies in my tummy!!! Oh boy, I love babies. I'm ever such a good mommy. I love to feed them and clean them and....oh yeah, did I tell you I get lots & lots of food. That's my favourite part!

Boy is mommy nuts or what!!!??!!!
We finally get some relief from the humidity and it's off to some place called Orono for another dog show! And this time, mommy's taking me!! She knows I hate the car!! Why oh why can't I just stay at home with daddy & everyone else??? We wanted to play in the back all day and get dirty & smelly and covered in grass clippings that daddy so thoughtfully spread all over the backyard!! We love having green feets, it's like a salad in a bag only it's all over our feets. LOL
I guess it was worth the trip cause my big sister, Flora came back with some pretty ribbons and mommy was all happy cause she gots something call Winners Bitch. Boy I don't think I ever wants to be called Winners Bitch??? Well then mommy picks me up and starts washing the drool out of my beard and combing me and fluffing me when all I want to do is snooze in the pen. It's so very hot here but the breeze feels so good.
Finally, we went over to the big tent and mommy made me walk around on the grass and stand pretty for this nice lady called a judge. She called me cute!!! I'm not cute!!! I'm a hooligan!!! At least that's what daddy calls me, his little hooligan!! and daddy's always right!! So nobody better call me cute!!
Anyways, then she looks at mommy and says Winners Bitch, Best of Winners, Best of Breed, Group 1 and Puppy Group. I don't know what she was talking about but she gave mommy all these pretty ribbons! I like ribbons, daddy likes ribbons and I'm bringing them home to him!!
Back in the car (did I tell you I hate the car?) and we finally gots home around 7pm. I was soooooo exhausted I couldn't eat my din-din and it was my favourite, ground chicken wings, mmmmmmm, yum. Finally, mommy picked me up and we all went to bed and dreamed of our exciting day in Orono!!!! ZZZZZZZZZ......

Dog Daze of ???????

Here's one little girl who's nose is totally out of whack as mommy won't let her stay out in the heat for very long!!!! Flora can't understand why a black coated Hav can't stay out in the sun when it's so very beautiful in the backyard.

This time of year is dangerous for our furbabies in that they can become overheated and dehydrated very quickly. Make sure that there is always some shade available along with fresh water. Signs of dehydration are lethargy, vomiting and excessive panting. Many people do not realize that dogs cool themselves by panting and this is one way they have of perspiring. Another way of perspiring is through the pads on their feet.

If you think your furbaby has become dehydrated, take them out of the sun into a cooler area immediately. Wet or immerse them in cool (not ice) water and then fan them vigorously to help cool them. Give them small amounts of fluids every few minutes but do not allow them to drink excessively as this could cause vomiting. If you have any electrolytes you can add them to the drinking water to help restore the bodies' nutrients quickly. If improvement is not almost immediate, get them to a vet ASAP!!! They may need subcutaneous or intravenous fluids!!!

WOOFSTOCK !

Well, we finally made it to Woofstock and boy what an exciting trip that was! Everywhere you looked, people, dogs, booths, it was soooooo busy. Flora and Downsy made their first trip to the big city and boy did they have a ball, especially Downsy.

When we got to the St. Lawrence Market we met up with Darlah, Nathan, Katsura & Downsy's sister, Fiona. From the moment we entered the market area, we were handed bags and treats and samples. It was dog heaven with vendors carrying everything from doggie popsicles and yogurt to doggie caterers, clothing suppliers, leashes, toys, beds and even a woman called the "Dead Dog Lady" singing about pets at the Rainbow Bridge and unfaithful husbands!?!

Downsy, of course, had to sample everything that was handed out. She gave her seal of approval to just about everything but the peanut butter popsicle. That was definitely a 2 paws down! We still have a strawberry one in the freezer to try later. Trying to control myself from buying one of everything was the most difficult and I succeeded by buying two new beds for the girls and that was about all except for a bag or two of treats!

Just received a picture of Rylie, one of Lola's pups and she's turning into a beautiful young puppy! She's even found herself a Havanese BFF in her condo and they play in the park all the time. This other Hav is from Saskatchewan but I don't know what kennel she is from. So if anyone has sent a puppy to Toronto, specifically the Yonge/Eglinton area, drop me a line.
BTW, Rylie was Lavender in Lola's litter and she is on the left in the picture.

Well, Lola and I have recovered after our weekend in Orangeville!! 10 hours of sleep will do a body good!!! Sorry Darlah, don't mean to rub it in, ;-)

When I was away, Alex decided to visit our friends and of course, took all the girls with him. Poor man was a little frazzled as Downsy upchucked all the way there and proceed to have a very loose poo. Here's a shot of him and Tony (creator of the MacToons) trying to clean up little Downsy!

Isn't it amazing how a 6lb Hav can bring two 6'5", 225lb men to their knees!!!

My human mommy has me staying at the Talemaker house with her while we do shows and THAT boy dawg Katsuro. He thinks he's in love but I am a gal who attracts the guys so he's going to have to perfect his game if he expects to get a Cuban babe like me.

Sure - he snuggles real fine but.... it takes more to impress THIS gal.

Well, we are hanging out. Getting our game plan in place and going to kick some ahem - so watch out!

Flora is fascinated watching Nathan lead the Talemaker crew a merry chase around her backyard! There was an afternoon thunder storm so we were in for some wet dawgs but what's a little water among friends!
Even Brittany, the Beardie joined in with the fun, barking out orders to all the puppers and making sure that peace was kept in the Chicadoro backyard.

This is Chicadoro's Bella Isabella, otherwise known & loved as Izzie. She decided that when her Daddy Mike got his tax refund from Revenue Canada that she was entitled to half. After all, a girl needs a little pocket money, right!!! Unfortunately, as all good Havies know, paper is deeeelicious and the thrill of having that paper in her little paws was more than she could resist.....She therefore did what any self-respecting Havie girl would do she proceeded to take her half of the cheque (carefully leaving Daddy's half in Mommy's purse) and munched away till it was alllllll gone!!!
It's a good thing she's cute....but all is forgiven and she now has a new life preserver and will be going to the cottage this weekend to try it out.

Mother's Day

Well, it's a bright & sunny morning here in Brighton and I'm getting ready to drive into the city to see my mom for Mother's Day. I think I'll take Lola with me and go to Darlahs' for a quick visit and maybe pick up some doggie goods at Ren's in Oakville.
My Mother's Day resolution is to try and post something to my blog at least every day (or every other?) and keep it up to date.
I never did keep a diary as a kid so this will be an effort for me as I can never think of something to write. Those of you that know me, know that doesn't apply to "something to say", BG. I'm never at a loss for words in person, LOL.
There's something brewing at Chicadoro and maybe I'll let everyone in on the secret in the next month or so.............

The Visit!!

Oh, we're so excited here at Chicadoro. One of Maggies' babies is coming for a visit next week and it will be so nice to see her after all this time. Here's a recent photo of Coco taken at Grandma's house at Easter. Isn't she the cutest!!

Coco will be staying with her sister, Fiona, at Talemaker while her mom, Maggie & I are at a show in Harrisburg, PA this weekend. I've already told Darlah and Nathan that I'm picking her up on Monday when I get back from the show. They can't have her the whole time!!! Share nicely!!

We're Famous!!!!!

One of our best friends is a cartoonist and satirist. He is published in the local paper and has also produced a couple of books of his work. Although his cartoons are political in nature, mostly local politics, occasionally he strays from this area and a few weeks ago this was one of those times. The small black dog is his schnauzer, Hamish and the larger dog is my Beardie, Brittany. The name on the dog bowl is his tribute to our Hav, Lola.

His cartoon the following week was this one after he visited our newest addition to the family, Downsy!!! I have to thank him for taking a few pounds off me!!! LOL!!

What an exciting week!!
We have company and the Havs are fascinated by the big dogs. Every time one of them enter the room, it's alert!! alert!! bark, bark, bark!!! You would think that after living with Brittany all their lives they would be used to two more Beardies? But no, these aren't the brown/white Beardie that they have always seen, these are slate/white Beardies. Obviously to the discerning eye of the Havanese, this makes a major difference!!

And to make matter worse (oh, the humanity!!) they dare to sleep in the Havanese beds!!! Don't they know that they'll stretch these beds out of Havie shape???

And we won't even mention the space they take up in Mommy & Daddy's bed, hogging all the pillows, boy, some company they are!!!!!

Well, they are a lot of fun and we all enjoy having them here. I think they will be missed next weekend!

My human parents took me to this crazy dawg house where I could visit my Havanese mommy and my daughter.

One of my Havanese kids who hasn't yet left the nest and thinks she can take over the bed - the couch - the everything - came along for this crazy trip too.

She's a real pistol (dark sable) much like her sister.

The light sable one is her sister that left the nest to live at this crazy dawg house we visited.

I sauntered into the house and suddenly I found I was back to mothering her again. A mother's work is never done - you know. The pups just thought - well they are pups and full of life and woah do they know how to have fun. What can I say?

Darlah has been gently prodding me to create a video of the pups. Feeling somewhat intimidated, I decided that I needed no furthing nudging and here are my results. Not bad for a first-timer if I do say so myself!!

LOLA here!! Mommy Y says she's too pooped to write so I'm gonna give you the whole lowdown on what's happenin' here at Casa Poole. And seein' as how I've gots the keyboardie thing all to myself, I thought everyone would like to see me when I was a little girl in Cuba.

Gosh, I was sooooooo purty!!! Oh, yeah, were was I????

Well, we've had so much excitement here for the past 6 weeks that I don't know where to begin.

Last week Mommy Y started brushin' me and complainin' bought how I had more sticks and leaves in my coat than there were in the 'tire yard??? I don't know where she gots that idea from as we's gots 5 whole acres and that's a whole lots of leaves. Anyway when she was finished she popped me in the sink and cleaned me up reallllll good. Boy, she don't 'ppreciate how long it takes a girl to get the smell of that perfumey stuff out of her hair. Must be why Mommy Y calls me her "junkyard dawg"?

Well, where to begin??? I guess the most 'portant news is that all my babies are now in their forever'n'ever homes. I was so sad to see them go but it was time for them to leave the nest and for me to get my girlish figure back,bg!!!

Lavender went to live with Iris & Michael in a beautifool coop?condo?partyment?(sounds like a henhouse to me??) but MommyY says that's a very nice place. Here they are on the day my baby left home on her new adventure! She's changed her name! Guess she wants to be a big city girl!!!

And this picture is of Rylie Lavender enjoying her new toy & blankie. MMMM? new toys?? new blankie??? Maybe I should go for a little visit, MMM???? Wonder if the food is good there??

Yvonne's Chicadoro Pups Visit

Wasabi just wants to say, we look forward to the pups visiting us tomorrow and we hope Risa's baby - Yvonne's Maggie is preggie too. Then we get to play with even more Havanese puppies - Fun!

Well, it finally happened.... One of my babies has gone to her new home. Jasmine left on Saturday to live with Dave & Holly. Momma Yvonne says that she will be very happy in her new home as she has her very own Beardie, just like us!!!

I have to admit it is a little easier to look after four but I miss my little tri-colour girl.

And now I'm told another one of my girls is leaving on Saturday to live the big city life at Yonge & Eligible, oops Eglinton. Lavender is really looking forward to moving into a loft with Iris & Michael. She fell in love with them last week and they with her!!! How can you keep a girl in the country after she's seen the bright lights? I hope she'll still come to visit.

The morning after.....

Well, it's the morning after our big adventure in the city. We forgot to bring the camera to Dr. Cochrane's appointment and so we have no pictures of our big trip. 5 puppies in a crate and not a peep for 2 hours on the road. Dr. Cochrane was very impressed by how calm we all were for the test. We all passed with flying colours she said.

After we're done in the garden, we sleep for hours. Mummy and Yvonne think this is just great! Something to do with sleep????

Lola's Puppy Visit

Wasabi wants to say it was great seeing your puppies, Lola. They are so cute and a courageous crew indeed. They just plowed up and down the stairs without any hesitation. You are doing a great job, Lola - so did Mommy Yvonne and Daddy Alex. You are so lucky.

Me, I am just waiting till my pups come and it seems like forever. Mommy keeps checking my temperature and it's not all that comfie. How did you put up with it?

Wasabi's Visit

So much fun here yesterday!!! Wasabi came to visit and to tell me that she's having 6!!! count em 6, puppies. Boy, is she is for a big surprise. Lola only had 5 and let me tell you it was "WORK" with a capital WWWWW......

I, of course, did my part in helping with the babies and lawdy, lawdy, Miz Scarlet, was I tired. So much runnin', jumpin' & just plain workin'!!!

As you can see, here I am observing the little ones from my perch in Daddy's garage.

Goodness knows, I can't be having those little hooligans, oops, Darlin's, messing up a girl's hair!

Well, all I can say is good luck to my best girlfriend. Hope you can find someone like me to assist you. Course, you could always get Risa & Shoshi to help out!!!

Maggie's Roadtrip!!

Well, we're back and what an adventure!!! 2,500 miles (not kms) in 5 days and 4 nights!!!!

I know that it was that far cause I heard mummy & Auntie Rita say it was so. My mummy drove the whole way and wouldn't let anyone else take the wheel. She tol' me that I was her responsibility & cause of that she had to do all the driving. Poor Auntie Rita had to sit and talk to mummy all the way there and back!

Now, normally I am not too fond of the car but I settled in real quick and just watched my big sister Lola. She's been on a couple of big trips and she told me that I just had to relax and enjoy the scenery. She also explained that we would get lots of nice treats just for being good and not barking too much. And you know what! she was right!!!! We gots chicken from some chalet place and licks of something cold and sweet and lots & lots of treaties.

We crossed over a big bridge and went to a different country called the USofA. I don't understand what's a different country cause everyone & thing looked the same as the old country. Some big scary man asked mummy lots of questions and wanted to know why we wanted to go to the different country. Mummy said we were visiting friends but I know that we were going to visit a "special" friend for me.

We finally got to Minnie Apples on Friday nite and went to visit an old friend of Rita's called Nona. She was a really, really nice lady and gave me hugs and snuggles and told me what a pretty girl I was. Then she took us to another place to visit another nice lady named Cassie.

Now this is where the story gets interesting!!!

Mummy, Auntie Rita & Nona took me in to visit a boy doggie named Rowdy. He was kinda' cute but he sure lived up to his name!!! All he wanted to do was jump all over me. I'm very delicate you know and I'm also a lady!!! No one jumps on me (unless it's my sister bg) and I told him that in no uncertain terms. But there was something about this boy that was really attractive. I don't know what it was but he was the type that kinda grew on ya.

I let him court me for a while and that was nice but then he started jumping on me again. Mummy & Cassie made me stand still and then..........................! Oh, the horror!!!!! I can't repeat what happened but I thought I might like it to happen again. And you know what, it did, again and again.......

Something tells me that Lola won't be the only one with puppies soon?? Mummy said that if we timed it right that I'm gonna have my very own babies!!!! Yay, I love puppies!!!!!

Well friends, that's all for now. My paws are still tired from our long trip and a girl has to catch up on her beauty sleep.
